A DDE communication occurs as follows; one application requests a communication channel to another application over the operating system (MTE -> DBM for example). The OS(!) then sends a Broadcast Message and this causes the disturbance. Using WM_COPYDATA only shifts the problem a little, as finding a window (as well as the OS!) is also dependent on a Broadcast Message.

An initial non-DAVID application has now been identified that is responsible for DDE communication problems:

"hpqtra08.exe"

The file is in fact delivered with the installation of a current hp printer.

-- HPQTRA08.exe is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor.
-- It's responsible for inbound communication from the printer to your computer
-- when the printer is connected through the network,
-- so you need this for scanning and checking ink levels.

also see the following article:

The file is found in 'autostart' and should be removed. Subsequently restarting the machine should result in Digas applications running stable and expediently again.

-- HPQTRA08.exe is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor.
-- It's responsible for inbound communication from the printer to your computer
-- when the printer is connected through the network,
-- so you need this for scanning and checking ink levels.
